Beginnings

So, I wanted a little vegetable garden so badly, that last spring my parents surprised me with some landscaping timbers and cash to get started! Wonderful aren't they? We have a really nice yard, and rent a small duplex.

First we dug up and tilled a 4'x4' plot. Added several bags of organic topsoil and mushroom compost. Bought some seeds and starts and hoped for the best! My mother loaned me 4 large containers, and I reserved these for tomatoes and peppers. Unfortunately the tomatoes and peppers didn't thrive... I got a couple small fruits that didn't grow and little hands found them all too easily.

My cucumbers and watermelon did produce, but not very much, and the watermelons did not get very big.My yellow squash, zucchini, and okra THRIVED! Until the squash vine borer took out the squash and zukes.

Okra - the last one standing!

So I've planned, researched, asked my friends for advice so many times I'm sure they're sick of me! I have a plan, I have strategies, I have sources, I have books, and I have ambition! This year we're expanding five times over... and I have a lot of work ahead of me. I hope that everything works out and our garden does well this year!
